The Newcastle Muslim Association says opening up its mosque this weekend is all about celebrating diversity and promoting harmony.

Tomorrow's community event is part of the Mosque Open Day taking place across Australia.

There will be tours of the Wallsend building, a barbeque, international sweet tastings, and henna tattoos.

Association spokeswoman Diana Rah hopes the day helps breakdown misconceptions and leads to social cohesion.

Ms Rah said more than 400 people attended the inaugural open day last year.

"We're all about promoting community harmony," she said.

"It is a celebration of diversity. It helps to breakdown the misconceptions in the community, and it's misconceptions that lead to fear and division.

"And as long as we can help to breakdown those misconceptions and misunderstanding, we hope that it will lead to community harmony and social cohesion."

Ms Rah said everyone is invited.

"This is the second year we've done it and last year was a huge success, we had more than 400 people coming to visit us," she said.

"We loved every moment of that, and we're looking forward to the open day this year.

"I think that just getting to know each other, getting to know one another really helps to break down fear and misconception."
