In honor of the Muslim-American students killed in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, the Clifton Mosque competed with more than 275 organizations in 34 states in a national food drive that will benefit the Freestore Foodbank.
Organizers said more than 30,000 items were donated, and local Muslim community members said the food drive is exactly what their mission speaks to.
"I believe, and we believe as Muslims, that we have to be the reflection of divine love in our community. And we have to be the change that we want to see. So we really need to combat all hate with love. Love is the only thing that will conquer hate," Ismaeel Chartier of the Imam of Clifton said.
The Clifton Mosque serves many college students from UC and Xavier, and organizers said they felt a special duty to participate in the food drive. Organizers said the mosque will hold a food drive each year as it continues to memorialize the lives lost in North Carolina.
